This is an aspect of pharmacy training that is traditionally associated with pharmaceutics. Pharmaceutical Microbiology deals with ensuring microbial quality of drug dosage delivery systems. This mainly involves avoiding micro-organisms (asepsis), eliminating (sterilization) their presence in medicine and preventing the growth of any microorganism which might enter the product during storage and use (preservation).

Biotechnology aspect is to expose to the knowledge of using tissue culture, living cells, or cell enzymes to make a defined product. DNA and monoclonal antibody (MAb) technologies have provided exciting opportunities for development of more pharmaceuticals and approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Research efforts are geared towards genetic engineering in the development of new drugs and vaccines.
