Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry

The Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry is part of the highly collaborative, interdisciplinary Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry are disciplines at the intersection of chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, and pharmacology and various other biological specialties, where they are involved with design, chemical synthesis and development for market of pharmaceutical agents, or bio-active molecules (drugs).

Medicinal Chemistry is a discipline with a traditional focus on organic synthetic chemistry with the broad goals of drug discovery and optimisation. Pharmaceutical Chemistry focuses on quality aspects of medicines and aims to assure fitness for purpose of medicinal products. The Department is involved in both teaching and research of various aspects of medicinal and natural products chemistry, synthesis, pharmaceutical analysis and quality control of pharmaceuticals.

Research focus of the Department includes:

Isolation and structural characterisation of active ingredients of natural products    particularly Nigerian medicinal plants

Synthesis of potential lead compounds and structure activity relationship

Development and application of separation techniques: HPLC, GC, AAS, UV etc

Pharmacokinetics research in the fields of drug metabolism and disposition

The main objective of the Department is to contribute to the aim and objectives of the Faculty in the training of pharmacists.Students are trained and equipped with the knowledge and techniques necessary for a career in the pharmacy profession

  • Enhance and promote excellence in drug therapy.

  • To discover and develop new therapeutic agents.
  • To ensure the safety of active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished products through research and training.
